A Tribute to Tony

The charity was proud to give a guard of honour to a friend and much missed volunteer on the day of his funeral. The large crowd was a testimony to the man Tony was.

Tony volunteered with the charity first in 2006, in 2007 and again in 2010 returning to Kenya on all three occasions. Tony formed great friendships with the local people and as the awful news spread, tributes were passed from contacts in Kenya, Burma and from Argentina.

It is ironic that a few hours after Tony’s passing, a family member answered a call on Tony’s phone from a Kenyan man called OT with whom Tony had formed a close relationship. OT was calling from Kenya for a chat, a catch up, but certainly was not expecting the awful news.

Any of those that travelled on the volunteer trips will have their own memory of Tony, from his first experience of bunk beds in the Nairobi campsite, the many Mosquito bites, his bond with he Moving Mountains driver OT, his refereeing of the football in 2006, repairing the motorbike, but probably the most fondest was his way of keeping team spirits up with his jokes, yarns and stories!

A mechanic by trade, Tony had a fundraising idea which flourished in 2009. A classic 1980’s car was restored by Tony and was offered as first prize in a grand draw. The idea developed into an extremely successful fundraiser which provided funds for several projects and causes and made some real differences.

Without doubt, the project closest to Tony’s heart was the construction of a water well in the compound of the Barkatado orphanage in Western Kenya. Not only would this well provide water for the orphanage, but it also provided a source of income as the water could be sold. It was only fitting that the well was dedicated to Tony’s late wife Noreen who had sadly passed away in 2003.

In 2010 Tony made the emotional trip to Noreen’s Well and was able to see the worthwhile project and be part of a blessing ceremony carried out by our friend Fr Mathews Oduor

Tony will be sorely missed foremost as a father, a grandfather, a family man, but also as a great friend and volunteer who gave up his time to try to help those in need.

May he rest in peace.
